The Maldives has been known for its pristine blue seas, picture-perfect gateway to paradise and beautiful islands.

The tourism of Maldives was severely hit due to the pandemic, however last year when the borders were open, tourism to the Maldives saw a level close to its pre-pandemic levels.

Amidst global warming and rising sea levels, Maldives is one of the countries that will be affected severely and the world’s lowest-lying nation has planned to offer something to have a stable solution for the rising sea level.

The Maldives Floating City has just been green-lit for construction: 5,000 housing units that are linked together and tethered to the floor of a 500-acre lagoon, designed to preserve and enhance its natural and cultural ecosystem.

All about the floating city

The Maldives floating city will be located just a 15-minute boat ride from Male city and airport, the project is based on an integrated tourism model which will include hotels, houses, shops and restaurants.

The city will be a car-free zone where one can navigate via the canals and this would have natural white sand roads where one can travel via foot, bicycle and electric buggies.

International travellers can obtain a residence permit with a purchase of the house here. The first floating housing block, under construction by Bison, will be transported to the lagoon and opened for public viewing in August.

The modular city construction is slated for January 2023 and will take about five years to complete.

The Maldives Floating City is a private-public partnership between Dutch Docklands and the island government.

The Maldives Floating City is the first floating city where this would have over a thousand houses which are constructed with full support from the government.

This is a unique city, located both above and underneath the water surface, creating blue habitats projecting and stimulating coral growth. Artificial coral banks will be attached to the underside of the city, which will stimulate coral to grow naturally.

More information on the Maldives floating city will be available here.
